There's a new charter school opening in August, located in the Lowry area. This will be a Core Knowledge K-8 school, but only going through 6th grade this fall. The school is at 10th & Yosemite, chartered by the Aurora Public School District.
Vanguard Classical School (VCS) was started by the Cerebral Palsey Foundation of Colorado and will have a higher-than-average number of students with disabilities. But their educational program is purposefully designed to serve all types of students. The Core Knowledge content will be delivered with the student who needs to move around in mind. It won't look like the traditional Core Knowledge school.
VCS has a brand new building to open in. They share the facility with CP of Colorado and CP's HeadStart preschool program.
Any family in the Lowry area should seriously consider this new charter school because it has all the elements to be a success!

"Nice Brochure, Disappointing School"
I am very disappointed and even saddened by my children's experience at this school.
We received a beautiful flier touting the core curriculum and Singapore math. We were so excited. We went to a meeting with the school's founder, and left even more thrilled. Finally, my son who is in fifth-grade and doing seventh-grade math will be challenged. And my daughter will be able to get a top notch private school education for free.
I arranged to have my second-grader and fifth-grader shadow for the morning at the school.
The results:
The fifth-grade teacher scolded my son - who AGAIN was a GUEST and has no history of behavior problems - for sticking his tongue out.
She made him sit in the back of the room for 45 minutes and write down what he did wrong. He was so humiliated he started crying and covered his face with a paper to hide his shame.
And another disappointment: my son said they were only multiplying single digits in fifth-grade!
Meanwhile, my daughter, who is attending a PUBLIC DPS school, said that she felt she was "back in first-grade."
When the teacher asked the class how to alphabetize, my daughter was the only one who easily knew how. Plus, she said the artwork looked "half done." Her teachers were nice and encouraging. But there was nothing special academically.
I encourage anyone who is interested in this school to look beyond the open houses and the brochures. Visit the classrooms. Shadow.
The one good thing about this experience: it has made me vastly appreciate our current schools.
