CK and a Wasted Day

Yesterday's Core Knowledge conference in Colorado Springs was a waste of time! I've been to three national CK conferences and at least six state CK conferences and have never seen anything so disorganized! I never did get to attend a session.

I spoke to someone from the CK Foundation about how poorly organized the conference was. She said they'd anticipated 700 people and instead had 1700 register. I said that projection didn't make sense since the last state CK conference had over 1,000 participants (about 75 schools in Colorado use Core Knowledge). People from all over the U.S. were at this conference.

I wasn't the only one who complained. I was told whole schools asked for a refund and left the conference. During each of the workshop slots there were several hundred people hanging around in the lobby because they couldn't get into any of the workshops. One person told me that she'd tried three different workshops during one time slot and all were over-filled with people standing in the hallway.

It was great to see different charter school principals and teachers whom I know, but other than that, it was a wasted day I'll never get back.

As the president of the Core Knowledge Foundation, I do want to respond to the comment regarding the Colorado Springs Regional Conference. While I realize that it may be impossible to meet every participant's expectations, I am truly surprised and disappointed to learn that you did not have a positive experience at the conference. I was present throughout the two-day conference and interacted personally with many attendees who were stimulated and energized by the conference sessions. I regret that you did not seek me out at the conference to express your dissatisfaction and would greatly appreciate it if you would contact me directly now(lindab@coreknowledge.org) I would like an opportunity to talk with you personally to find out where and how your conference experience failed to meet your expectations. Certainly, it my goal and that of our entire staff to ensure that the Core Knowledge Foundation is responsive to your needs and supports your work as a Core Knowledge educator.

Sincerely,
Linda Bevilacqua
